Andrew Livingstone, Meltdown, 2014, Limited Edition

$250.00

10 3/4" diameter porcelain plate with onglaze decal. Produced in an edition of 12 with 1 artist's proof.

This plate features an image taken from an original 19th century plate produced in Paris, France. Livingstone has ‘melted’ the original image to create both a visual spectacle but also to draw the viewer to the connected metaphor, which comments upon the decline of the ceramics industry in Europe.

Andrew Livingstone’s practice operates within the expanded field of ceramics where he engages with material, process and the social contexts in which ceramics are located. The familiarity of ceramic material and object take center stage within his work, where both the handmade and readymade are employed. His work has included installation, site-specific, ephemeral and new media applications. His work has been included in exhibitions at The Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, Garth Clark Gallery, New York and The Saatchi Gallery, London. His work is also held in many private and public collections internationally, including the Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He was awarded an Honorary Award at the 5th World Ceramic Biennale Korea 2009, and was awarded the Jurors Prize at the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale 2012.

Livingstone studied ceramics at Camberwell School of Art, London and holds a PhD, The Authenticity of Clay and its Redefinition within Contemporary Practice: Ceramic Familiarity and the Contribution to Expansion. He is Reader in Ceramics at the University of Sunderland where he leads CARCuos the Ceramic Arts Research Centre.
